Mastering, in the studio, is the process of assembling all the mixed tracks into a single album. The studio mastering technician is the link between the mixing technician and the manufacturer or the general public.

At its most basic it involves adjusting the overall frequency envelope and relative loudness between tracks. Moreso it involves equalizing the amplitude depth between tracks and finding a reasonable compromise such that the music sounds good in a variety of listening environments.
